Some time ago, while having lunch at Tenuta San Guido restaurant I had the pleasure of meeting the Marquis Giovanni Incisa della Rocchetta, grandson of the Marquis Nicolo Incisa della Rocchetta and his wife. I was told by Dr. Carlo Paoli, director of the “Tenuta San Guido” company, who had presented it to me, that the Marquis Giovanni was the manager of the Tenuta di Salviano winery in Civitella del Lago, in the province of Terni. I confess my ignorance because I didn’t know this reality. The company is in a wonderful position, the vineyards overlook Lake Corbara and are owned by the Incisa-Corsini family. It counts two thousand hectares that extend over the hills overlooking Lake Corbara and is about ten kilometers from Orvieto. Only seventy hectares are intended for the cultivation of vineyards. The company produces white and red wines. Among the white grape varieties there are trebbiano, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and grechetto. Among the red vines are cabernet sauvignon, merlot, pinot nero and sangiovese. The estate uses, to the minimum possible, chemicals and pesticides. It was interesting to taste the “Salviano di Salviano” wine, vintage 2018, which is an IGT with 100% Grechetto grapes.
Tenuta di Salviano
Umbria I. G.T. Grechetto, vintage 2018,
(Grapes: 100% Grechetto)
It wears a straw yellow coat with gold and gray reflections. Multifaceted nose with aromas of white pepper, fresh celery, light white pear, honey, starch (spray starch for ironing), white flowers, intense graphite, citrus, brackish, ending with puffs of brewer’s yeast. Pleasant sip with brewer’s yeast flavor already perceived on the nose. Wine with generous medium body, fat, sapid and mineral.
Good gustatory balance with alcoholic mass dominated by freshness and minerality. Long is its persistence with a floral finish. This very pleasant wine would have needed, in my opinion, more freshness.
(92/100)
I also tasted the wine “Salviano di Salviano”, Umbria IGT, vintage 2018 with Chardonnay, Semillon and Sauvignon blanc grapes, noting that it would need more freshness, because it would have given it greater taste balance. Finally, I tasted the Salviano Orvieto Classico Superiore wine, vintage 2018, feeling it very salty. A simple wine, but pleasant for its generous salinity. It leaves your lips salty. I promised myself to go and visit this interesting and beautiful company.
