With the change, the vineyards have
found themselves in a privileged position, the grapes have ripened more and the
wines are pleasantly drinkable right away.

Chianti Rufina wines, in the past notoriously slow to
mature even in the bottle, found themselves immediately competitive with other
Tuscan denominations. It is always a pleasure to drink an old Chianti Rufina
because even if it has defects they are forgiven because, in general, old wine
has its charm and pleasantness.

My thought is that Sangiovese, Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir
have common identities of color, smell and taste. All three vines have a
generous freshness that distinguishes them.

Let us now return to the vertical that was held a few
months in Florence, in which we started from the 1979 vintage of the Chianti
Rufina Riserva to arrive at the 2018 vintage in two versions, one with the
Chianti Rufina Riserva 2018,

composed of Sangiovese, Colorino and Cabernet
Sauvignon and in which wood was the first actor and the other with Poggio
Diamante made at the behest of Gerardo Gondi with only Sangiovese grapes. In
this wine there was a bit of wood but only in the final taste. Surely with the
stop of the bottled wine, the wood will be lost. Congratulations to Gerardo for
this very pleasant wine.

I want to remember the good winemaker Fabrizio
Moltard, whom I have known for many years and who has been collaborating with
the Gondi family since the 2007 vintage.

The vertical was conducted by my friend Master of Wine
Gabriele Gorelli.

My tasting notes following.

As regards the width of the tannin, it is important
that you make the following clarifications, so that it can be understood. I
feel the tannin of the wine on the upper gum. The total width of the tannin is
6/6, i.e. the entire width of the upper gum. Obviously, if the tannin is less
wide, it could be for example 5/6 and so on. The width of the tannin is
important when the quality of the same is of a good or high level. If the
tannin is wider, the wine is more worthy of attention, but the tannin, as I
specified, must in any case be of good quality.

Let’s now go on to describe the wines tasted.

MARCHESI GONDI

TENUTA BOSSI

Chianti Rufina Riserva DOC, vintage
1979

(grapes: Sangiovese, Colorino
ed uve rosse)

Garnet red and transparent orange.

Olfactory debut with intense spicy aromas of black pepper,
nutmeg, and cloves followed by notes of dried plum, hay, chlorophyll, dead
leaves, undergrowth, wet earth, mint, eucalyptus, helichrysum (licorice, mint
and chamomile) to finish with whispers of carob.

On the palate it is savory and has a cherry flavor in
alcohol.

The body is medium delicate.
